What Your Check Engine Light Is Telling You

The check engine light is your vehicle’s way of saying its computer has detected a problem in the engine, fuel, ignition or emissions system. It can mean something as simple as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfire that is damaging the catalytic converter. The light alone doesn’t tell you which, so the most important thing is to find out what triggered it before the problem gets bigger, or before your next PA inspection.

At Royce Automotive in Lancaster, PA, we find the actual cause with flat-rate diagnostics — not just a code read — and explain it in plain language before any repair begins.

Common Causes of a Check Engine Light

  • Loose, damaged or missing gas cap
  • Failing oxygen (O2) sensor
  • Engine misfires from spark plugs or ignition coils
  • Evaporative emissions (EVAP) system leaks
  • Mass airflow (MAF) sensor problems
  • Vacuum leaks and lean running conditions
  • Catalytic converter efficiency faults

Steady Light vs. Flashing Light

  • Steady light: a fault has been stored — book a diagnosis soon
  • Flashing light: can indicate a serious misfire — slow down and get it checked right away
  • Flashing with shaking or power loss: stop driving if it’s safe to do so
  • Light on with other warning lights: have it checked before longer trips

What the Codes Mean, and What They Don’t

How trouble codes work

When the light comes on, the computer stores a diagnostic trouble code, such as P0420 (catalytic converter efficiency below threshold), P0300 (random misfire), P0171 (system too lean) or P0455 (large EVAP leak). Each code names the system and condition the computer noticed. It does not name the failed part.

Why a free code read isn’t a diagnosis

A code read tells you where to start looking. A P0420, for example, can be caused by a worn catalytic converter, but also by a faulty oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak or an engine running too rich. Replacing parts based on the code alone is how drivers end up paying for a converter they didn’t need. A proper diagnosis tests the suspected components and confirms the cause before anything is replaced.

What to do when the light comes on

First, check that the gas cap is tight; if that was the cause, the light usually goes out on its own after several drives. If the light is flashing, reduce speed and avoid hard acceleration, because unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter. Either way, book a diagnostic visit. Clearing the code without fixing the problem only hides it, and it resets the emissions monitors your vehicle needs to pass a PA emissions inspection.

How we find the cause

Our flat $80 diagnostic fee includes taxes and fees and covers up to one full hour of testing: scanning every module, reviewing freeze-frame and live data, and testing the suspected parts directly. You get a clear explanation and an upfront estimate, and nothing is repaired without your approval. Most qualifying repairs are backed by our 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.

Check Engine Light in Lancaster, PA FAQs

Why did my check engine light come on right after I got gas?

A loose or worn gas cap is a common cause. The fuel system is sealed, and the computer notices when it can’t hold pressure. Tighten the cap until it clicks; if that was the problem, the light usually turns off on its own after several days of driving.

Can a free code read at a parts store tell me what is wrong?

It tells you which system set the code, which is a useful start, but not which part failed. The same code can have several causes. Our flat-rate diagnostics test the suspected parts so you only pay for the repair that fixes it.

Will the check engine light turn off by itself?

Sometimes. If the condition that set the code goes away, such as a tightened gas cap, the light usually turns off after several drive cycles. The code stays stored in the computer for a while, though, and a light that keeps coming back means the problem is still there.
