Pre-purchase inspection — $80
Understand the Vehicle’s Condition Before You Buy
A used vehicle can look clean and drive well on a short test drive and still hide worn brakes, leaking seals, rust underneath or stored trouble codes. A pre-purchase inspection gives you an independent, professional look at the vehicle before you hand over your money, so you can buy with confidence, negotiate the price, or walk away.
At Royce Automotive in Lancaster, PA, our certified technicians inspect used cars, trucks and SUVs from private sellers and dealerships, and explain what we find in plain language.

What to Expect From a Pre-Purchase Inspection
What’s included
We put the vehicle on a lift and look at the things a test drive can’t show you: leaks, worn suspension and steering parts, brake and tire condition, rust on the frame and brake lines, and signs of past accident repair. A computer scan shows stored trouble codes and whether the emissions monitors are ready — monitors that aren’t ready can mean codes were recently cleared. Then we road-test the vehicle to check how the engine, transmission and brakes actually perform.
How long it takes
Most pre-purchase inspections take about 45 to 75 minutes. Book ahead so the seller knows when to have the vehicle here; inspections are done at our shop at 2707 Columbia Ave during business hours. Times are estimates: some vehicles and jobs are more involved and take longer.
How the process works
Arrange the time with the seller, then book online, call or text us. When the inspection is finished, we walk you through what we found and send you a written summary with photos, separating safety issues and expensive repairs from normal wear. If repairs are needed, we can tell you roughly what they would cost so you can factor them into your offer. The inspection is a visual and mechanical assessment of the vehicle’s condition on the day we see it; it doesn’t include taking parts apart, and it isn’t a guarantee against future problems.
What it costs
A pre-purchase inspection is $80, including taxes and fees. For a used vehicle, it’s a small cost compared with buying a vehicle that needs thousands of dollars in repairs. If you buy the vehicle, we’re here for its maintenance and repairs too.
Ready when you are. Pick a time online, or call and talk it through.

Common questions
Pre-Purchase Inspection in Lancaster, PA FAQs
Can you inspect a car I am buying from a private seller?
Yes. Arrange a time with the seller, then book the inspection and have the vehicle brought to our shop at 2707 Columbia Ave. Most honest sellers are happy to allow an inspection; a seller who refuses is telling you something too.
What if the inspection finds problems?
That’s what it’s for. Small issues are normal on any used vehicle. We explain which findings are safety concerns or expensive repairs and which are routine wear, so you can negotiate the price, ask the seller to fix them, or walk away.
Is a PA inspection the same as a pre-purchase inspection?
No. A PA inspection checks whether a vehicle meets the state’s minimum safety and emissions standards on the day it’s inspected. A pre-purchase inspection looks at the vehicle’s overall condition, including leaks, wear and upcoming repairs, to help you decide whether it’s worth buying.
